In markets a range of goods were sold including olive oil, grains, silk, spices (pepper), sugar, coffee beans and animal skins. The muhtasib (whose duty was to see if everything is running well) visited the market everyday. Merchants had to sell their goods according to the prices that the court gave them. The prices gave merchants a 10-12% profit. If merchants broke the rules, they could be beaten on the soles of their feet with a cane or nailed to the doors of their shops.
